Does Getting Tattooed Hurt?

If you’re thinking about getting a tattoo, you’ve probably wondered: “How much is this going to hurt?”
It’s one of the most common questions we hear in the shop — and the truth is, tattoo pain is real, but it’s also manageable and different for everyone.
Here’s what you need to know.

Myth #1: Tattoos are unbearably painful.

Reality:
Most people describe tattoo pain as more annoying than agonizing.
Clients often compare the sensation to:
  • a persistent cat scratch
  • a hot vibration
  • or a mild burning feeling
Everyone experiences tattoos differently, but the vast majority of people find the process very manageable — especially for smaller pieces.

Myth #2: Pain is the same for everyone.
Reality:
Pain tolerance is highly individual.
Your experience can depend on:
  • stress and anxiety levels
  • hydration
  • sleep
  • whether you’ve eaten
  • your natural sensitivity
  • the style of tattoo you’re getting
Two people can get the same tattoo in the same spot and feel it completely differently — and both responses are normal.

Myth #3: Some artists are “gentle” and others are inherently “heavy-handed.”
Reality:
Technique matters more than toughness.
Experienced artists understand depth, speed, and how to properly stretch the skin. These factors make the tattoo process more comfortable and help the final piece heal beautifully.
At our shop, we prioritize:
  • clean, consistent technique
  • intentional linework
  • proper machine setup
  • checking in with clients throughout the session
Pain shouldn’t be part of the “aesthetic,” and a skilled artist won’t make the experience harder than it needs to be.

Myth #4: All body areas hurt the same.
Reality:
Some spots are easier than others — but none are impossible.
Generally less painful areas:
  • outer arms
  • forearms
  • calves
  • outer thighs
  • shoulders
More sensitive areas:
  • ribs
  • spine
  • feet and ankles
  • inner arms
  • stomach
  • back of the knee
Even in the spicier areas, the pain is usually tolerable — just a bit more intense.

Myth #5: You just have to “tough it out.”
Reality:
There are many ways to make tattooing more comfortable.
We encourage clients to:
  • Eat a good meal beforehand
  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoid alcohol and blood thinners
  • Bring headphones or something relaxing
  • Let us know if they need breaks
  • Use slow breathing to stay calm
  • Break up your sessions over time for bigger pieces
If you have questions about placement, pain levels, or scheduling your first tattoo, feel free to reach out — we’re always happy to help guide you through the process.
